Sadly, such accidents are more common than you may realize. Each year, more than 500,000 people nationwide are treated in emergency rooms and more than 700 people die from bicycle accident injuries. Last year in Michigan, 19 cyclists died and 1,648 sustained injuries in accidents statewide. On average, 26 cyclists each year in Michigan are killed in bicycle accidents.

What can you do to protect yourself? The single most important thing: wear a helmet. Cyclists wearing a helmet have a dramatically better chance of surviving an accident than cyclists not wearing a helmet. That’s why many states and communities have laws requiring cyclists to wear a helmet. In Farmington Hills, MI, where Sallman was killed, the city requires all cyclists under 16 years old to wear a helmet. Sallman was not wearing a helmet at the time of his fatal accident.
